Victorian Pearl Open Crescent Moon Brooch – 15ct Gold

Description An absolutely beautiful Victorian pearl crescent moon brooch, in an open crescent setting. Modelled in 15ct gold and with a C clasp closure. This brooch is a lovely example, with extra detail of the gold beading around the edges. Measuring 4.2cm long. Symbolism in Victorian Jewellery Victorians were incredibly thoughtful and symbolic, indeed, every aspect of their life from clothing to tapestries to paintings were brimming with symbolism.  Jewellery of course was no exception and in other posts, I’ve talked about the symbolism of flowers, but here we talk about the crescent moon and why it was such a popular and important symbol of the time. Crescent moons symbolise the feminine moon goddess, and as such, is associated with female empowerment.  At this time obviously we had Queen Victoria as the UK monarch, female empowerment in practise! The moon also symbolizes change, for just as the moon cycles through phases, so does life. Crescent moon jewellery was often given as courtship gifts.  It symbolised the hope that a new relationship would develop into marriage, much in the way a crescent moon will eventually turning full.
